Pra desktop, o melhor seria você começar atualizando o sistema pra 10.1, tem muita coisa que foi feito pra desktop que não entrou no 9. Vai facilitar bem a sua vida.

Tem alguma coisa no seu make.conf? A árvore do ports tá atualizada?
