In one of my classes this morning, I caught one student repeatedly turning to another and talking.

on while we read or do homework.
But I'm still trying to figure out if I, personally, would feel any difference in the energy required to run a discussion as opposed to a lecture.
"  Trust me, I would usually be the first to chime in with the answer. Well, I am getting too philosophical, I am afraid Most tutors I meet at college are somewhat distant and indifferent people. in my room, I constantly have DVDs playing.
Another student gave me one of those glass mannequin heads that often display hats, just because they thought I would enjoy the weirdness of it. I want to send a gift of appreciation with my thank you note.
But the major way I have kept away from the screen is by playing poker every night this week.
While some events were successful, the kickball game on Monday night for example, ours was not. These devices are fantastic for visual aids, but I haven't seen professors using them very creatively, let alone with much expertise.
I do like to tickle the ELMO.
Many of the students who I speak to who watch tv and refuse to abstain claim that it is their only time in the day to relax after completing  homework and other activities.
If they're not, I see students eyes get droopy, and it troubles me. I'm no less busy than I've always been.

if your students need motivation, you can tell them to go build houses in Alabama. What's not: The tick-tick-tick of the tenure clock; grading papers; salaries at the low end are indeed low.

I tend to approach virtually all of my lectures as a form of dialogue to begin with, even when addressing a large crowd in a formal setting.

A bottle of water, shot from above, makes an interesting spiral pattern.
